Mystery Case Files: The Countess Collector’s Introduction:
The Mystery Case Files series originally emerged from the internal studios of Big Fish Games, but various installments were subsequently developed by Eipix Entertainment between 2015 and 2019, as well as Elephant Games from 2013 to 2014. The most recent additions to the series were crafted by GrandMA Studios. This game series is renowned for its hidden object puzzles, where players assume the role of a Master Detective and must locate a specific number of concealed items within elaborately painted scenes.
In 2007, Big Fish Games estimated that approximately "100 million individuals had at least tried trial versions" of the Mystery Case Files games since the initial release of Mystery Case Files: Huntsville.
The latest release in the series, Mystery Case Files: The Dalimar Legacy, made its debut on March 16, 2023, marking the 25th installment in this captivating franchise.
Gameplay:
Mystery Case Files: Huntsville marked the inception of the hidden object game genre in casual gaming. In this genre, players are tasked with identifying a list of hidden objects among a plethora of items displayed on the computer screen. Upon successfully locating all the specified hidden items, players advance to the next stage of gameplay. Many hidden object games offer a limited number of hints to assist players in case they are unable to find a required object.
As with all Mystery Case Files titles, Huntsville heavily relies on hidden object gameplay. Following the completion of each hidden object puzzle, players return to their Crime Computer to tackle subsequent puzzles, gather evidence, and help pinpoint the identity of the thief. Each puzzle must be solved within a time limit, and failure to do so requires players to start over with an entirely new scenario.
Prime Suspects also leans heavily on hidden object gameplay but introduces a novel device that only functions if players discover batteries within hidden object scenes. This device enables players to see through walls to locate hidden objects. Players must gather evidence within a limited timeframe and deduce which suspect is most likely responsible for the theft of the Queen's Hope Diamond.
Ravenhearst allows players to piece together the missing pages of Emma's diary by heavily incorporating hidden object scenes. Puzzles are introduced to the gameplay as players must solve them to unlock various doors in the manor, granting access to locked rooms. Towards the end of the game, players must find keys scattered throughout the manor to free Emma's soul from the mansion.
Final Words:
Mystery Case Files: Huntsville serves as the inaugural installment in the Mystery Case Files franchise, launching in November 2005. Players step into the shoes of a master detective tasked with solving a series of seemingly unrelated crimes in the small town of Huntsville. The game encompasses a variety of locations to explore and introduced the pivotal Crime Computer, which remains a core element of the series. As the levels progress, the detective uncovers that the apprehended criminals are connected to a secretive organization known as S.T.A.I.N., each member bearing a trademark in the form of a Skeleted Head tattooed on their body or on items. These members specialize in different styles of Smulge, including Handwork Building, Scratch Folk, Thievery, and more.
